Inflammation. We always hear it’s bad. But why?
Normally, inflammation is actually a good thing.

Deaths from opioid painkillers have TRIPLED over the last two decades
According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, overdose deaths due to prescription painkillers have more than tripled in the past 20 years, escalating to 16,651 deaths in the United States in 2010.(4)

What’s more, a recent study by the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre of 446,763 people concluded that taking high doses of prescription painkillers increases your risk of having a heart attack by up to 50% within the first month.(20)
Dr Mike Knapton, an associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said:
“[the study] worryingly highlights just how quickly you become at risk of having a heart attack after starting NSAIDs. Whether you are being prescribed painkillers like ibuprofen, or buying them over the counter, people must be made aware of the risk and alternative medication should be considered where appropriate.”(21)
With so many people dying every year, you may be wondering why doctors continue to prescribe painkillers like candy?

A review of 18 human trials comparing glucosamine sulphate to prescription painkillers for treating osteoarthritis were published in 2005(8):
– 7 out of 13 trials found that glucosamine sulphate was significantly better than a placebo in relieving pain.
– In all 13 trials, the side-effects reported by participants who were given glucosamine sulphate weren’t significantly different from those reported by participants who got the placebo.
– 3 out of 5 trials found that glucosamine sulphate was significantly better than the placebo in improving walking and other daily activities.
Another review of further trials in 2007 found that(9):
– 2 out of 3 trials found that glucosamine sulphate was significantly more effective than NSAIDs in reducing pain, while the third found that both treatments had similar effects.
– 1 trial out of 2 found that glucosamine sulphate was significantly better than NSAIDs in improving physical function, while the second trial found that both medications had similar effects.
– 3 out of 4 trials found that the side-effects reported by participants taking glucosamine sulphate were significantly less than those reported by participants who were given NSAIDs.
Shark Cartilage is more widely taken as a supplement for cancer symptoms, wound healing and eye repair.(10)
Recently, shark cartilage has also started to be used for joint pain as it contains calcium, phosphorous, and complex carbohydrates, which are all building blocks for healthy joints and bones.
In fact, it is recommended by the University of Orthopedics as for knee pain:
“Shark cartilage has been shown to lessen the pain and stiffness in knees. This is because it contains mucopolysaccharides, powerful anti-inflammatory molecules. Shark cartilage is available in capsule form that can be taken as a dietary supplement. While it may not completely eliminate the pain, it might help.”(11)
Dr. Joseph Orcasity, a consultant at the University of Miami Medical School, gave a shark cartilage supplement to a dozen elderly arthritis patients with severe knee pain for four weeks. At the end of the trial the majority of patients exhibited reduced pain and swelling and increased mobility.(12)
New Zealand Green Lipped Sea Mussel
New Zealand Green Lipped Sea Mussel is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which are believed to have anti-inflammatory and joint-protecting properties. Like glucosamine, some studies suggest it may be effective for repairing and rebuilding your ligaments, cartilage and joints for long-term pain relief.

A study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information found that:
“There is high level evidence … for symptomatic benefits from fish oil use in rheumatoid arthritis, and there is biologic plausibility for its clinical effects…Fish oil also has safety advantages in reducing cardiovascular risk via direct cardiovascular effects and via non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug-sparing. This is an important aspect of fish oil use, given the increased cardiovascular risk in rheumatoid arthritis.”(14)
In a human trials of between 30 and 80 people of periods between three and six months it was assessed that:
“Green-lipped mussel was more effective than a placebo in reducing pain, improving function and improving overall quality of life when taken along with usual painkillers (for example paracetamol) and NSAIDs. Both forms were effective, with 73% of the lipid group and 87% of the powder group showing significant improvement.”(15)
In another human trial, 250 people who suffered from nonsurgical neck or back pain were asked to take an omega-3 fish oil supplement instead of painkillers. By the end of the study:
– 59% stopped taking painkillers altogether
– 60% said their overall pain had improved
– 60% said that their joint pain had improved
– 88% would continue taking fish oil
– 0% reported any side effects (16)
Chondroitin is found naturally in the connective tissue between cartilage and bone. It is believed to help improve the shock-absorbing properties of joints by increasing water retention and helping to prevent further wear and tear.
– Professor Johanne Martel-Pelletier, at the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre, conducted a study of 600 patients with osteoarthritis. After 24 months the group who were given a combined glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate supplement were found to have retained more cartilage than the placebo group.(17)
– A 2011 study showed a significant improvement in pain and function in patients with hand osteoarthritis after taking a chondroitin supplement. (18)
Long-term pain relief, rather than an instant fix
While some studies suggest these natural nutrients and minerals may be as effective as painkillers in relieving joint pain over the long-term, they are not as fast acting and they are not miracle cures.
It can take up to 8 weeks for your joint’s ligaments and cartilage to repair themselves and the inflammation to reduce before you notice consistent pain relief.
So you need to be patient.
If arthritis and joint pain is causing you severe discomfort, you may wish to continue taking painkillers in the short-term until the supplements start to do their job.
